Ely the Fortunate
Life
Ely was a very old hamlet before the later housing estates that arose after the Cardiff Corporation bought the Ely farms of Ty Coch, Green Farm and Sweldon. From 1922 this farm land was built upon, building thousands of houses within a short space of time.
The fortunate life was so because it was a working class area where everyone was equal if we were poor as children we did not know it because everyone was in the same boat so to speak.
The suburb was on the outskirts of Cardiff City with picturesque country side in the Vale of Glamorgan and the outdoor life was one of the best character building exercises to influence the children of the district.
People brought up in Ely had a close association with the surrounding districts and it's countryside, you could not recount your upbringing without mentioning Barry Island, Cwrt yr Ala, St Fagans, the Drope, Plymouth Woods, St Georges, and Wenvoe etc.
A saying that is probably overstated but true to the ethos of Ely is:
'I'm Ely born and Ely bred and when I die I'll be Ely dead'.
